Oil and Charcoal Creating Life

Right now in Squires Student Center’s Perspective Gallery hangs the work of local Southwest Virginia painter Jonathan Murrill.

The paintings currently displayed are part of Murrill’s Working Man Series, which will be on display until March 29th.

Murrill’s style focuses on oil-based painting consisting mainly of middle-aged men, who are grisly, rough and real.

“In my concentration of oil painting I focus primarily on the human expression and personalities of many Southwest Virginia workers I have worked alongside,” said Murrill.

The attention to detail in Murrill’s shadowing and coloring add a layer of transparency to his subjects.

If you are looking for a talented young painter in the Southwest Virginia area, you should take a look at this young painter.

Murrill graduated from Radford University with an MFA degree in oil painting and now teaches art classes at Virginia Western Community College and Craig County High School.
